The crosses are one of the most characterist shows of the popular architecture. These stone crosses are located at churches, cementeries and crossroads to protect the travellers or consecrate pagan places.
The crosses are of devotion origin although people sometimes build them with motive of request, offering or praise. People who wanted to be forgiven by God, cure some illness or protect themselves paid the cross. Some crosses are also situated in places where some violent action took place to avoid that the spirits can harm the travellers.
Therefore the cross not only is a sacred object and a symbol of devotion and respect but also a monument that indicates the border among parishes or villages.
Nowadays people continue sculpting crosses although their symbolism isn´t longer the same because people use them in one ornamental sense.
The crosses are composed of an ornamental base which has several steps and a pedestal in which there is a column that supports a capital. The capital shows several decorative motives such as geometric, plants, figureheads... and finally the cross.
There are 103 crosses divided among different parishes of the town.
